Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Managua and transfer to Best western hotel.
You’ll be greeted at the Managua airport and transferred to the Best Western Hotel Las Mercedes. We will have a brief orientation dinner.

Day 2: Transfer to rio Indio Lodge
We’ll take the morning flight to San Carlos, gateway to the Rio San Juan where it begins its journey to Caribbean. We transfer to a fast boat along the San Juan River to the Rio Indio Lodge. We start our trip at the furthest point east where ships from the East Coast of the United States dropped off their excited passengers on their way to California. Greytown was the Caribbean port, where we begin, and San Juan del Sur is the Pacific port where they continued on to San Francisco.

Day 3: Old Greytown
Today we visit the historical Greytown, previously a lively port-town were the inter-oceanic route started. This old town was destroyed in the 80´s and a new town was rebuilt nearby. The only thing left in Greytown is the old graveyard, where Captains, pursers, diplomats, and other inhabitants of this town were buried here. We will hike back to the Lodge through the rainforest.

Day 4: Silico Lagoon Tour
The beautiful Silico Lagoon is our destiny on this day. This fresh water lagoon hosts a large population of Manatees. Kayaking, fishing and birding are just some of the optional activities.

Day 5: El Castillo Fortress and transfer to Sabalos Lodge
Continuing with the Gold Rush Fever inter oceanic route, we’ll travel up river, witnessing the lushness of the Nicaraguan rainforest. Then we will need to stop at “The Devil´s Rapids”, place that was chosen by the Spanish to build the Immaculate Conception Fortress (aka El Castillo) to stop the pirates from entering Lake Nicaragua. Then we will continue on our way to Sabalos Lodge.

Day 6: Various activities at Sabalos Lodge
We will have a number of optional activities to enjoy on this day, all of them will give you the chance to relax, enjoy the rainforest and the river.

Day 7: San Carlos Fortress and transfer to Ometepe
The San Carlos Town and its fortress is our next stop on our inter-oceanic journey. San Carlos is located just where the San Juan River starts, on the eastern-most side of Lake Nicaragua. Then we will go to Solentiname, a peaceful archipelago filled with nature, colorful balsawood handcrafts and primitive paintings. Our final destiny is the Ometepe Island, one of the world´s largest islands on fresh water lakes and ancient indigenous ceremony site.

Day 8: Ometepe Island
Today we´ll get to explore the Cascada de San Ramón, a 150ft high waterfall located on Maderas Volcano. To get to the waterfall we´ll hike on the slopes of the Volcano, while we enjoy the views and the biodiversity found on the trail.

Day 9: Transfer to San Juan del Sur
To complete our journey to the Pacific Ocean we´ll take a ferry from Ometepe to Jan Jorge. A short drive to “La Virgen” former docking-place for the steam ships coming from San Carlos. Then we´ll drive the 12 mile strip of land between La Virgen and San Juan del Sur, on the Pacific Ocean.

Day 10: La Flor Wildlife Refuge
The adventure continues with a visit to La Flor Wildlife Refuge, were annually thousands of Olive Ridley turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs. We will also have the chance to hike a trail with local community guides that will show us about the tropical dry forest and the pre-Columbian pottery found in the area.

Day 11: Transfer to Granada
Today we move to the colonial city of Granada, settled on the shore of Lake Nicaragua, was target of several pirate attacks during the colonial period. Granada was able to grow back from the ashes several times, becoming the charming and colorful city that now stands.

Day 12: Depart
Transfer to the Managua Airport and departure
