Volunteer Trip
Trail Building in Cloud Forest Reserve of Datanli El Diablo
minimum 8 participants
8 Days: Jinotega · Datanli – El Diablo Nature Reserve
$1,250/person
One of the many challenges for local communities who want to become involved in sustainable tourism is appropriate infrastructure. Join us as we work with 4 local communities to complete a trail system where visitors will be able to hike from community to community through the lush cloud forests of Datanli-El Diablo Nature Reserve in Northern Nicaragua. The trail sections we complete will contribute to a “hut-to-hut” trail system and be a model for the entire Mesoamerican region. You will be staying in local communities, working with local and regional trail experts, and benefitting the local communities enormously. Besides the spectacular birding and wildlife viewing, coffee harvest will be in full swing for the lower elevations surrounding the reserve.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival to Managua
You will be greeted upon your arrival and we will have an overview in the evening at the conveniently located Hotel Las Mercedes, across the street from the international airport.

Day 2: Transfer from Managua to Jinotega
We leave the heat of the central valley and climb into the pine-oak habitat of the central mountains. During coffee season the region is bustling with activity as local producers prepare their harvests for market. We will be in a coffee processing area surrounding the reserve and have a visit to one of the larger coffee “fincas”. We then continue to the community of El Gobiado where we will be staying the next four nights. Accommodations will be a mix of a small guest house and very comfortable safari style tents.

Overnight: El Gobiado, Datanli-El Diablo NR, Jinotega

Day 3 - 5: Trail Building at Datanli – El Diablo
For early risers, there will time each morning for some local birding and nature walk before breakfast. We will have a hearty “campesino” breakfast and prepare our lunches for the field. Each day we will get an overview of which section of trail we will be working and then hike to the location. El Gobiado is strategically located with sections nearby. Our goal is to work from about 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM each day with lunch in the field. We will then have the option of exploring the area or relaxing at our base area.

Overnight: El Gobiado, Datanli-El Diablo NR, Jinotega

Day 6: Jinotega
After breaking down camp we will visit some nearby attractions and have a fun and relaxing day before arriving to the town of Jinotega. After four nights in the community, our hotel will feel luxurious. We will have a big farewell dinner with our new friends.

Overnight: Hotel Café, Jinotega

Day 7: Return to Managua
In the morning we will take the Ruta Sandino and visit the museum in San Rafael del Norte and return to Managua late afternoon.

Overnight: Hotel Las Mercedes, Managua

Day 8: Depart
